The Kahuterawa is an awesome run just behind Palmy. It features a 4m waterfall, miles of contiuous gd. 4 drops and boulder gardens, and a rocky drop soon after the start that's sometimes portaged. You need to get there in torrential rain. It's up if you can bump down to the confluence of the two streams at the put-on then it will go. If it isn't up yet it will be by the time you've run the shuttle.

Put-in: Scott's road leaves SH57 about 8 km south of Linton. Drive for miles along it over the ridge untill eventually it forks. The right fork leads to the river.

Take out: Kahuterawa road leaves SH57 just north of Linton. Drive right to the car-park at the end. To shuttle you can run or bike for 30 mins along the Back Track from here (over the bridge) then onto Scott's Road for a couple of km back to the car.

Gauge: Horizons (0508 4 FLOOD) Kahuterawa gauge or rainfall at Scotts Road. The gauge is below the section so might not come up until you're off. Somewhere around 3-7 cumecs is the minimum you'd want. 10-20mm of rain minimum at Scott's road brings it up. Has been paddled at huge flows (30+ cumecs).

The first rocky drop -- level is 7 cumecs (about the lowest I'd want to do it, apparently it goes at lower flows)

The biggest drop. We both messed up the line here!

Loads of bouldery rapids, quite powerful for the size of the river. Can't wait to do it at a higher flow

The photo is blurry cos I'm paddling so fast, not cos it's getting dark
