| We tramped the horseshoe around Ribbonwood Creek, just North of Lake Heron. Didn't do the side trip to Mt Sykes, still the best mountain climbing we've done in ages though. Deep soft snow made climbing hard at first. Ribbonwood Hut/motel is a 4-bunk hut with a fire and mattresses, once maintained by Geraldine tramping club (nice hut but we didn't stay). You need to call Lake Heron station on 03 303 9014 for permission to park at the station and walk accross the farm to Ribbonwood Creek (or drive there--the road is good except the ford would need 4WD). The station is at the end of the public road.
