Gallery / 03-07 Lahar

Our latest photos are in the South Island gallery
The Lahar was formed by the tephra dam holding back Ruapehu's crater lake bursting during torrential rain. Fortunately we were in the area (paddling the Mangawhero in flood) so could get to Colliers bridge in time to see it, just after the peak flow had passed. Hil tries to model this event so was quite excited...
 Ohakune the day before
Whangaehu from Colliers Bridge -- we didn't stay here long as the bridge was shaking when rocks hit!
We missed the main peak but you can see where it's been
 Sampling just below Colliers bridge
 Hil and her Lahar!
